Abu Dhabi, UAE October 15 – The National Center of Meteorology is hosting the inaugural UAE Antarctic Research Program Workshop at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi, with the participation of prominent global experts from various countries. The workshop highlights the crucial role of Antarctica in understanding and addressing global climate change and its far-reaching impacts.

In his opening speech, Dr. Abdullah Al Mandous, Director General of the Center, emphasized the urgent need for research in polar regions, stressing the profound effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and changing weather patterns, and their negative impacts on coastal communities. He explained that climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today, reflecting the increasing impact of human activity on the environment. He noted that the Gulf region, including the UAE, is not immune to these effects, but rather faces threats related to water and food security, which necessitates collective global efforts to understand and effectively address these changes.

Dr. Al Mandous also pointed out the importance of understanding the complex relationship between polar ice melt and weather patterns in the mid-latitude regions, as these connections play a critical role in shaping global climatic conditions. He emphasized the need to enhance cooperation between countries, academic institutions, and research entities to exchange knowledge and expertise, underscoring that scientific research is key to understanding the complex environmental challenges we face today.

He added that this ambitious research program reflects the UAE's commitment to investing in science and research, enhancing its position as a global leader in providing innovative solutions to climate challenges.

The workshop aims to enhance understanding of current global research priorities in Antarctica and to foster collaboration and partnerships between UAE researchers and their international counterparts. It also seeks to develop a research program that identifies priority areas for the UAE's involvement in Antarctic studies and to build the capacity and expertise of Emirati researchers in the field of polar research, contributing to enhancing the UAE's status as a global contributor for scientific research in this area.

The workshop discusses several key topics, including international policies and treaties related to polar research, major research activities being conducted by large organizations in Antarctica, and identifying priorities for the UAE Antarctic Research Program. It also includes panel discussions and interactive workshops to enhance active participation from attendees.

The workshop is expected to result in a strategic research focus for the program and increased institutional awareness of the importance of polar research. By hosting this workshop, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to scientific excellence, environmental stewardship, and international cooperation in the field of scientific research.

The polar regions are facing unprecedented changes, and the UAE is directly affected by the impacts of climate change in these regions. Understanding the relationship between polar ice melt and weather patterns in mid-latitude regions is vital for effective mitigation strategies. The UAE remains committed to investing in polar research and enhancing international collaboration, reflecting its ambitious vision for achieving environmental sustainability and addressing global climate challenges.

Hosting this workshop reflects the UAE's commitment to enhancing research capabilities and developing policies that support innovation and contribute to tackling climate change challenges, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation to achieve sustainable development goals.
